The S1000XR shows just how good BMW is at combining ‘adventure’ with ‘sports’ in a bike

Darren Salter - Tuesday, September 04, 2018

Do you like the idea of calling a company like South East Motorcycle Hire to rent a motorbike for your next big road trip around the UK or beyond, but aren’t sure whether you would prefer a sports bike or an adventure bike? Well in that case, what about the ultimate adventure sports bike?

You might not be surprised to learn that when the above are your priorities for motorbike hire near Gatwick Airport, the option we would especially recommend is a BMW. After all, the Bavarian marque has long excelled in both categories, with the S1000RR that is one of the world’s premier sports bikes, and the R1200GS that makes so much sense as an adventure bike.

But there’s another bike that has been specifically described as ‘adventure sports’, and which has won rave reviews on account of its brilliant blending of the comfort and touring practicality of the R1200GS with the sports appeal and dynamism of the S1000RR. It’s called the S1000XR, and you can rent it at a very reasonable price from South East Motorcycle Hire right now.

What has helped to make the S1000XR such a hit?

The S1000XR is effectively based on the S1000R roadster, which is a naked and ‘detuned’ version of the S1000RR superbike that pumps out 198bhp. With a 165bhp output from a 999cc, dohc, liquid-cooled four that is otherwise basically the same as the one in the RR, the XR doesn’t exactly lack in punch.

However, while the XR is certainly brisk, it’s also upright and comfortable. The twin beam aluminium perimeter frame with cast aluminium double-sided swing-arm is the same general configuration that you will find on the R and RR, for example, but both of these elements are all-new to deliver different geometry.

As for build quality... well, it’s a BMW, so you can expect the best around from the XR. All in all, the S1000XR is a premium product from a premium brand that very much lives up to its ‘adventure sports’ characterisation. As Motor Cycle News contributor Phil West commented after riding it for the first time: “On this experience, the XR isn’t just a bike for all reasons, I’m struggling to think of any reason why you wouldn’t want one.”

See what all of the hype is about today

Motorbike hire near Gatwick Airport really couldn’t be easier when you get in touch with South East Motorcycle Hire. We’re conveniently situated on the border of Kent and Surrey, just eight minutes from the M25 (J6), and we can even collect you from the airport if required. You can rent a BMW S1000XR – or any number of other bikes – from us for a day, weekend, five days or a week, alongside all of the accessories you might need such as a helmet, jacket, trousers and gloves.

In short, why even consider any other way of experiencing the incredible BMW S1000XR?

In need of a solid, good-value adventure bike? Look no further than the Suzuki V-Strom 1000

Darren Salter - Tuesday, August 07, 2018

The large-capacity adventure-bike class wasn’t always a category of strength for Suzuki; indeed, at one point it lacked a representative in the category at all, the previous V-Strom 1000 having effectively been consigned to history by tighter emissions regulations.

In 2014, though, the legendary Japanese marque re-entered the then-booming adventure class with a bike that may just represent your perfect option for Isle of Man motorcycle hire.

An unspectacular, but pleasing bike

Let’s get one thing out of the way first: if you’re seeking a bike for your next trip to the Isle of Man that’ll shock, startle and thrill you, the V-Strom 1000 that we have available for rent here at South East Motorcycle Hire probably isn’t the option you should choose.

However, what the V-Strom instead represents is something that is infinitely more important to a lot of those hiring a motorcycle from us: comfort, manageability and good value.

The specification sheet is certainly promising enough, the 2014 V-Strom 1000 being powered by a liquid-cooled, eight-valve V-twin engine with a capacity notably up on that of the previous model, from 996cc to 1,037cc.

Power has also been increased, by 2bhp to 99bhp, although when you have an ambitious journey to the Isle of Man or elsewhere planned, you might be rather more interested in the 41mpg economy that equates to a 182-mile range.

Many of the last V-Strom 1000’s parts have also been replaced, such as the cylinder heads and crankshaft. But the real story is the fuss-free experience that it provides, including the relatively little that you need to fork out to hire it from us, whether for a day, five days, week or weekend.

Winning no shortage of rave reviews

The critics seem to appreciate the V-Strom 1000, too. Just ask The Telegraph’s Roland Brown, for instance, who has described it as a “respectably quick, sweet-handling and well appointed V-twin that offers roadgoing practicality and comfort”.

Or what about Motor Cycle News? Giving it a score of four out of five stars, the enthusiasts of the trusted weekly newspaper have declared that the V-Strom 1000 is “easy to ride and manageable, delivering loads of low and midrange grunt. You can throw it around with confidence and it’s backed up by excellent traction control and ABS. It’s also comfortable, natural, frugal and simple”.

We can’t think of a much better mix of characteristics for a straightforward and stress-free adventure bike than that! So, don’t hesitate to get in touch with the South East Motorcycle Hire team today to make it your first choice for Isle of Man motorcycle hire.

The Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200 – the legendary BMW 1200GS-beater

Darren Salter - Tuesday, July 24, 2018

The Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200 – which we offer here at South East Motorcycle Hire as one of a wide range of options for those wishing to rent a motorbike near Gatwick Airport – entered production in 2012, and quickly attracted rave reviews.

However, those reviewers also couldn’t resist drawing attention to a particular model for which the Tiger Explorer 1200 was an obvious rival: the BMW R1200GS.

You see, until that point, it was the Beemer that was widely seen as the defining bike among big adventure motorcycles. However, many other manufacturers shied away from presenting their offerings as challengers to the R1200GS, claiming that unlike the GS, they weren’t designed to be taken off-road.

In truth, though, even GS riders don’t generally ride off-road, which meant that when the Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200 arrived, it really did have to be considered a competitor to the BMW. In any case, Triumph sought to take a very direct fight to the GS, even using it as the benchmark during a development process stretching back to 2006.

Does the Tiger Explorer live up to the hype? In short, yes

Triumph has said that its Tiger Explorer bikes were “conceived, designed and built to deliver the ultimate go anywhere, do anything transcontinental touring motorcycle for every adventure rider, wherever they ride.” In other words, this is emphatically a motorcycle that is meant to be comfortable on dirt as well as on tarmac.

Furthermore, the critics agreed that the British marque had been successful in achieving such a lofty goal, with The Telegraph’s Kevin Ash declaring the Explorer to be “excellent as a touring bike but still capable enough in a sporting guise, and dynamically better than a GS in almost every way.”

Motor Cycle News was similarly unequivocal, concluding that “Triumph has built a bike with more power, better handling, more agility and arguably better styling than [the] R1200GS.”

Now, you can experience it for yourself

A 1215cc liquid-cooled, three-cylinder engine producing 135bhp and at least 74lb ft of torque, up to a maximum of 89lb ft... and we haven’t even yet mentioned the economy of about 42mpg that gives a range of around 150 miles. All of the Tiger Explorer’s essential statistics sound good, but it’s the experience of actually sitting down on and riding the thing that is the proof of its excellence.

When you’re looking to rent a motorbike near Gatwick Airport for those ambitious journeys that might also take in a bit of uneven ground along the way, you could hardly make a better choice than the Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200. What’s more, it can be yours right now for a great price – all that you have to do is get in touch with South East Motorcycle Hire.

Head to the legendary Isle of Man TT aboard the perfect bike

Darren Salter - Monday, May 14, 2018

There are celebrated motorcycle races... and then there's the Isle of Man TT. It's been described as the ultimate road race, and certainly here at South East Motorcycle Hire, we would struggle to argue about that characterisation.

The event - run, as its name suggests, on the Isle of Man during May or June in most years since it was first held in 1907 - has brought us no shortage of thrills, spills, stellar feats and, of course, tragedy over the course of its astonishing history.

It's therefore hardly a surprise that tens of thousands of motorcycle racing enthusiasts converge on this part of the British Isles every year - and it's all set to happen again from 26th May to 8th June 2018. So, what can South East Motorcycle Hire do to get you prepared with the perfect set of wheels for the trip?

A paradise for motorcycling enthusiasts

The Isle of Man is certainly an enchanting and rewarding place to ride a motorbike, and simply having a handy mode of transport to get to the event isn't the only reason you may take an interest in Isle of Man TT motorcycle hire.

That's because, with the circuit consisting of closed public roads that are open outside race and practice times, you, too, can take to the same stretches of road as the competitors. But of course, it's important to note that you will also be sharing the road at these times with regular traffic. In addition, the mountain section between Ramsey and Douglas is one-way and subject to speed limits.

We are the go-to choice for Isle of Man TT motorcycle hire

With all of this in mind, there are certain characteristics that you are likely to want your chosen Isle of Man TT motorcycle hire specialists to have.

We have a great reputation for ticking all of the obvious boxes - and quite a few more - here at South East Motorcycle Hire. For one thing, we are true enthusiasts ourselves, which is reflected in the impressive range of bikes and equipment that we enable you to rent.

You'll also find us to be the ideal choice for group hire, thanks to our ridesharing scheme. The way it works is that your group rents multiple bikes from us, and you can ride any of them during the hire period at no extra charge. We can even arrange the delivery of your bike and equipment to the Isle of Man itself, so there's no need for you to collect it from our own site on the Kent/Surrey border.

Things are really hotting up ahead of this year's Isle of Man TT, and we aren't just talking about the weather. The 2018 event promises to be one of the most high-octane of recent years, so the South East Motorcycle Hire team would strongly advise all motorbike enthusiasts not to miss it!

How do we make things easier for you when hiring a bike?

Darren Salter - Monday, April 30, 2018

The weather’s getting better, the daylight hours are becoming longer and many more of us are thinking of getting out onto the open road on our motorcycles. But what happens if you’re currently ‘between bikes’ or have only recently become legally able to ride a motorbike?

In that case, you may take an interest in motorcycle hire from us. Here are just some of the ways in which South East Motorcycle Hire can make life easier for you when you wish to hire a set of wheels.

We’re conveniently located

It’s no wonder we’re such a popular option for motorbike hire near Heathrow Airport or Gatwick Airport; we’re excellently situated for both airports, and indeed, other transport connections throughout the South East of England.

You’ll find us on Crowhurst Road, Lingfield, just eight minutes from the M25 (J6) on the border of Surrey and Kent.

Both pick-up and delivery are possible

You can, of course, just visit us to pick up your hire bike. However, you’ve also got the option of having the bike and any equipment that you have rented delivered to any location within the UK.

Subject to fees, we can even collect you from various airports, train stations or ferry/channel ports in the South of England.

What about storage for your luggage?

If you have luggage that you aren’t exactly able to bring with you while you use your rental bike, we’d be happy to store it for you until you return with the bike.

All of the essential accessories can also be hired

Everything that you could need to get more out of your bike is available on a rental basis from us, including not just the obvious essentials such as a helmet, jacket and trousers, but also the likes of boots, gloves, rucksacks, tank bags, rear seat bags and even satnavs.

A ridesharing scheme for your group

When there are many of you in a group who each wish to hire a motorcycle, you might be interested in our ridesharing scheme that enables you to hire multiple bikes and ride any of them without having to pay extra.

Whether you’re looking for motorbike hire near Heathrow Airport, Gatwick Airport or anywhere else in southern England, you’ve chosen the right company when you opt for South East Motorcycle Hire. We’re all about making your life as a motorcycling enthusiast easier, so that you can simply focus on you, your bike and the road.

Just some advantages of hiring a motorbike this spring

Darren Salter - Wednesday, April 04, 2018

Motorcycling enthusiasts the length and breadth of the UK routinely look forward to the return of spring, and we can’t say we blame them. After all, if you’ve not climbed aboard a bike at all during the winter, you might well be itching to get back out onto the open road.

But what are the big advantages of using a trusted UK motorbike hire service such as our own here at South East Motorcycle Hire, instead of purchasing a motorcycle or not travelling by bike at all?

It’s a welcome opportunity to feel the wind in your hair

There’s nothing like being able to get out of the repressive environment of a car and onto a bike, so that you can experience the sensation of the wind rushing past you and the flies in your teeth.

On a more serious note, though, the spring is a good time to get used to riding a bike again if you haven’t been on two wheels for a while.

There’s a lot to get accustomed to, from ensuring that you have the helmet, leathers and other gear to suit your motorcycling needs this spring and summer, right through to the finer points of bike maintenance, such as washing, waxing and checking fluid levels.

It might be that you are presently ‘between bikes’, in which case, hiring a motorcycle from us enables you to slowly get back into the swing of things as a motorbike enthusiast while the weather gradually improves.

It gives you the chance to try out a new bike

Perhaps you’ve always wondered what a Triumph Tiger 800 XC is really like to ride, or whether those reviews you’ve read of the Fazer 800, Ducati Multistrada 1200S or BMW F800GS bear much resemblance to the reality?

Especially if you don’t own a bike right now, UK motorbike hire specialists like us enable you to sample a motorcycle that you may have long been curious about, at a sensible price.

It’s the perfect time for a continental trip

Have you long fancied embarking on an ambitious journey from Land’s End to John o’ Groats, or do you have an itinerary for a tour of the all-time great European motorcycling roads planned, but no motorbike with which to do it?

In that case, you need to know about South East Motorcycle Hire. It’s important to inform us beforehand if you intend to take your hired bike outside the UK, but otherwise, the continent can be very much your oyster this spring and summer.

You really shouldn’t miss the chance to take advantage of UK motorbike hire this year. Get in touch with our team today, and you can find out more about the wealth of benefits of our service, as well as the many intriguing, thrilling and highly rated motorcycles that we allow you to hire.

Great reasons to hire a Suzuki GSX 650F from us

Darren Salter - Thursday, March 22, 2018

Sometimes, you don’t need to spend a lot to benefit from a truly enthralling and rewarding experience on a bike; our own experts in affordable motorcycle hire here at South East Motorcycle Hire certainly know that.

It’s also why we are delighted to be able to offer the Suzuki GSX 650F among the many bikes that we give you the option to rent.

What’s so brilliant about the GSX 650F?

This sport touring motorbike reminds us of so many of the reasons we are so passionate about affordable motorcycle hire. It has been described as ‘a Bandit with a fairing’ – a reference to the long-running and popular series of sports-standard bikes that Suzuki also produces – but at the same time, is so much more than that.

The GSX 650F is certainly a great choice of bike if you’re a newcomer to the world of sports bikes, and want to start with something that you’re sure you’ll be able to handle. However, it makes just as much sense for older riders who’re looking for something less intense than obvious alternatives like its GSX-R600 stable-mate.

It’s a bike that has won plentiful acclaim for everything from its sheer affordability and ever-reliable engine, right through to its spirited but unintimidating performance and eye-catching fairing. The latter is reminiscent of the GSX-R sports bike style, but also provides genuine protection from the elements.

Become one of this amazing Suzuki’s latest admirers!

Among the GSX 650F’s many fans from down the years is Jane Omorogbe – probably better known to most people as “Rio” from ITV’s Gladiators – who in her capacity as a motorcycling journalist, said of the bike: “At a glance, you’d be forgiven for thinking the GSX 650F belongs in Suzuki’s superbike family... it is agile, fun and more than capable of dealing with whatever you throw at it.”

That’s not a bad endorsement! The even better news is that it’s one of our many affordable motorcycle hire options right now, right here at South East Motorcycle Hire, with great daily, weekly and weekend hire prices available.

Why not give this horrendously underrated motorbike a go yourself, whether for the working week or a much more ambitious cross-continent trip, and find out just why it has won such a legion of admirers since it first hit British roads in the late 2000s?

Some useful quick maintenance tips for your hire bike

Darren Salter - Tuesday, March 06, 2018

You may only be hiring a motorcycle from us for a week, a weekend or even a day, but that doesn’t mean you should completely ignore the maintenance aspects of motorbike use.

By following just a few of these simple practices, you can help to prevent any nasty shocks resulting from the poor maintenance of the bike you have hired from us.

Check the tyres

As the part of the motorcycle that is in contact with the road, the tyres are crucial from a handling perspective. However, they can also greatly affect the fuel consumption and therefore the amount you have to pay additional to the hire fee simply to keep the bike running.

Getting into a habit of routinely checking your hire bike’s tyres will enable you to spot any unusual wear and tear that can be a telltale sign of over or underinflated tyres. The tyre pressure and tread depth should also be checked regularly, even if there isn’t an unusual level of tyre wear.

Take a look at the oil and coolant levels

It’s a straightforward process to check the motorcycle’s oil level with a dipstick, plug or level window.

Keeping an eye on the coolant could also help to save you a lot of hassle later, and can be done based on the high and low marks on the outside of the tank. You will then be able to fill accordingly.

Look after the battery during the winter

The recent snowy conditions have led to many people taking advantage of motorcycle hire in the UK from us to ask what they can do to better look after their bike in the colder temperatures.

One aspect that we would suggest they pay close attention to is the battery, as when the temperature drops, its chemical reaction can be slowed down. The regular use of the bike will help to keep it charged, or you could use a trickle charger in your garage to assist in preserving the battery in the best possible condition.

Adjust the chain if needed

The chain is essential if you are to ride the bike at all, so the importance of checking it can never be overemphasised.

You should ensure that the chain can move up and down slightly when no one is sat on the motorcycle. The chain will tighten up when weight is placed on the bike, so it should be adjusted if it already feels too tight when you are inspecting it.

Lubricating the bike is also vital, with the lube being applied to the inside of the chain.

Things to consider when picking a motorcycle to hire

Darren Salter - Friday, March 02, 2018

There’s no doubt about it – clambering aboard a motorbike and heading out onto the open road as the flies hit your helmet is one of the most thrilling and rewarding experiences that anyone can have on tarmac.

However, choosing a motorcycle to hire from a company like South East Motorcycle Hire can be tricky. What factors will you need to think about to ensure you pick the right model?

How do you plan to use the bike?

UK motorbike hire from a firm like ours may be a rather less committal way of experiencing the biker’s lifestyle than actually purchasing a motorcycle, but it’s still important to consider whether the model you choose will be suitable for how you intend to use it.

There are big differences between car-sized high-capacity bikes and nippy little scooters. The motorbike that provides the best experience down country byways isn’t necessarily the one you will want to weave around a city on, so you need to consider these factors at an early stage to narrow down the options.

Are you a novice or experienced motorcyclist?

As much as you might fancy your skills on any set of two wheels, the truth is that it’s all too easy for an inexperienced rider to choose a powerful bike that they simply aren’t able to ride responsibly. A serious accident is the last thing you will want on a hired bike, so it’s vital to know your limits.

We go some way ourselves here at South East Motorcycle Hire to minimise the likelihood of anyone who takes advantage of our UK motorbike hire service getting into scrapes, such as by requiring hirers to be aged between 25 and 69 years old. However, you still need to take some responsibility of your own with your choice of bike.

Set – and stick to – a budget

Much like different motorbike models cost different amounts to buy, so the same applies to hiring them. We offer various price points for UK motorbike hire, depending on such factors as the model you choose and for how long you would like to hire the bike.

It’s therefore up to you to ensure you don’t overspend on a hired bike, accounting for such expenses as fuel and any accessories you might want to hire, such as the helmets, jackets and trousers that are also available from us.

Why not browse our site today, or call 01342 775008, to learn more about the process of hiring a motorbike from us?
